Who is the Daughter of Babylon?

Isaiah 47 (King James Version)

1 Come down, and sit in the dust, O virgin daughter of Babylon, sit on the ground: there is no throne, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called tender and delicate.

2 Take the millstones, and grind meal: uncover thy locks, make bare the leg, uncover the thigh, pass over the rivers.

3 Thy nakedness shall be uncovered, yea, thy shame shall be seen: I will take vengeance, and I will not meet thee as a man.

4 As for our redeemer, the LORD of hosts is his name, the Holy One of Israel.

5 Sit thou silent, and get thee into darkness, O daughter of the Chaldeans: for thou shalt no more be called, The lady of kingdoms.

6 I was wroth with my people, I have polluted mine inheritance, and given them into thine hand: thou didst shew them no mercy; upon the ancient hast thou very heavily laid thy yoke.

7 And thou saidst, I shall be a lady for ever: so that thou didst not lay these things to thy heart, neither didst remember the latter end of it.

8 Therefore hear now this, thou that art given to pleasures, that dwellest carelessly, that sayest in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me; I shall not sit as a widow, neither shall I know the loss of children:

9 But these two things shall come to thee in a moment in one day, the loss of children, and widowhood: they shall come upon thee in their perfection for the multitude of thy sorceries, and for the great abundance of thine enchantments.

10 For thou hast trusted in thy wickedness: thou hast said, None seeth me. Thy wisdom and thy knowledge, it hath perverted thee; and thou hast said in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me.

11 Therefore shall evil come upon thee; thou shalt not know from whence it riseth: and mischief shall fall upon thee; thou shalt not be able to put it off: and desolation shall come upon thee suddenly, which thou shalt not know.

12 Stand now with thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to profit, if so be thou mayest prevail.

13 Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee.

14 Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: there shall not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it.

15 Thus shall they be unto thee with whom thou hast laboured, even thy merchants, from thy youth: they shall wander every one to his quarter; none shall save thee.

Multitude of Enchantments - the Book of Enoch

The Book of Enoch is not in our modern Christian Bible. It reads much like other Old Testament prophets. However, I'm not jumping to conclusions to say it's anything more than a supporting document. But we do know that Enoch was an Old Testament prophet, actually the great-grandfather of Noah, and he is mentioned meagerly in Genesis and quoted in the book of Jude.

Genesis 5:21-24

"And Enoch lived 65 years and begat Methuselah: and Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: and all the days of Enoch were 365 years: and Enoch walked with God and he 'was not'; for God took him."

Enoch was a righteous man and a gifted prophet, and his book does contain compelling information for the future 'elect'.

Enoch 1: 1-2

"The word of the blessing of Enoch, how he blessed the elect and the righteous, who were to exist in the time of trouble; rejecting all the wicked and ungodly. Enoch, a righteous man, who was (1) with God, answered and spoke, while his eyes were open, and while he saw a holy vision in the heavens. This the angels showed me.

2From them I heard all things, and understood what I saw; that which will not take place in this generation, but in a generation which is to succeed at a distant period, on account of the elect."

The departure of the Book of Enoch from the Holy Scriptures is that it offers a tantalizing snapshot of pre-flood heaven and earth. Our Bible covers the many-thousand year period from Adam to Abraham in eight short chapters of Genesis. I have always thirsted for knowledge of this time period, but thought nothing existed.

We have probably all wondered what happened so wrong to cause God to wipe out the whole earth. In fact, Noah came directly to his elder, Enoch, when God told him to build the ark. Very long story very, very short: a group of two hundred angels (sons of God) made a pact to come to earth and intermarry with women (daughters of men).

Enoch 7:1-2 1It happened after the sons of men had multiplied in those days that daughters were born to them, elegant and beautiful.

2And when the angels, (3) the sons of heaven, beheld them, they became enamored of them, saying to each other, Come, let us select for ourselves wives from the progeny of men, and let us beget children.

According to Enoch,the angels taught the women such things as sorcery, dividing roots, astronomy, signs, the motion of the moon, metals, mirrors, jewelry, stones, dyes, the beautifying of the eyebrows. It took relatively little time for these practices to become commonly used and misused.

Regardless of the origin of astrology and eye-liner; when I read Isaiah 47, God immediately made me realize I am a daughter of Babylon who "has practiced enchantments from my youth". In fact, our western civilization is the very definition of pagan. Soon it will be too much for the earth to bear....

I am thankful to Jesus for shedding his blood as a sacrifice, so the whole world could know redemption of sins. I praise God that He chose to send His son as a new covenant for the Gentiles, including the children of Babylon. Whether Christians today are Enoch's elect, or a (God forbid that the earth be corrupted any further!) future generation will be, I find comfort in these words:

Enoch 6:11-12

11Then shall wisdom be given to the elect, all of whom shall live, and not again transgress by impiety or pride; but shall humble themselves, possessing prudence, and shall not repeat transgression.

God Speaks To Us Through His Scriptures!

Many different scholars of the end times will give you many different answers to the question, "Who is the Daughter of Babylon"? While some of the answers are compelling, none of them have anything proven by fact as of yet.

I may not be THE Daughter of Babylon, but I am certainly one of them. In many times of prayer and supplication, the Lord has sent me to Isaiah 47 and impressed upon me the similarities of this 'woman' and myself.

At first, uncanny. With contemplation, not surprising. Regarding the future of this woman - quite grim. Will I live to repeat the mistake made by the ancient Babylonians? I hope and pray that my end is more palatable. Sometimes I feel like every day with my dear husband and three teenage children is a great gift.

The least I can do is bless God and serve Him the rest of my life, for without Him I had no life. My blogs come from an open heart and mind to the Holy Spirit, who will indwell believers who want Him.
